Alice M. Harper

Alice M. Harper (1932-1999) was a music instructor and band director at Annapolis Junior High School for over 30 years. She was the first female conductor of the Naval Academy Band and a conductor of the Maryland All State Band.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Miss Harper was a graduate of the university of Michigan and came to Annapolis in 1953. While teaching in Annapolis, she served as president of the Maryland State Band Director's Association and as a member of the board of directors of the National Band Association.

Other Music Groups

Miss Harper founded the Anne Arundel Community Band in 1980 and was its first director. It continues today as The Bay Winds Band.
